«On serait habitués on le ferait comme tout le monde» : les dimensions sociolangagières de l’ambivalence des dispositifs scolaires destinés aux jeunes voyageurs

Abstract : This work starts from the observation of a break in education between the end of Primary School and the beginning of Secondary education of young travellers. It intends, on the one hand, to study, how the National Education system provides a culturalist explanation to pedagogical problems and, on the other hand, to observe the effects, sometimes unexpected, produced by such speeches on student travelers themselves. By creating a dialogue between the approaches of critical sociolinguistics and political sociolinguistics, this thesis seeks to reveal the socio-linguistic dimensions of school systems intended for student community travelers in all their political ambivalence. During a three-year ethnography, three corpus were created: a selection of institutional texts, transcriptions of interactions with agents of the National Education system and finally transcriptions resulting from situations of interactions with students in Cned-Efiv class (specific school system for youngTravelers after Primary School. The analysis of these corpus reveals the linguistic and institutional processes that build the school exclusion of young travelers and the subjective positions that they adopt within the classroom. The first part presents a theoretical sociolinguistic reflection articulating the notion of socio-political of devices with theories of reproduction and emancipation in the school setting. In the second part, the historicalcontextualisations of Travelers status, school and school failure as well as the issues of the concept of illiteracy in connection with Travelers, show the mechanisms of categorization, outside and in school, of a part of theFrench population. The third part describes, based on essentializing speeches produced by various nationaleducation professionals, the organization of the processes of alteration of young Travelers. Finally, the last part of the thesis attempts to describe, from the analysis of the reflective positions of the students, the ambivalence of the devices caught in a tension between a process of decapitalization and emancipation, according to the definition that Rancière make of this term. Indeed, if the device excludes young people from the ordinary school system, it also allows a reversal of the classic unequal relationship between the knowing and the ignorant, from the teacher to the pupil.
