Categorical perception of differences in modal scale for the Lebanese children aged between 6 to 12

The semiotic modal theory introduces an analytic apprehension of the traditional monodies from the Orient of the underlying phonological categorization of pitches that is highly hierarchical. Thus, this distinctive categorization highlights two competing chains of third, one of which is primary associated with the final modal, and the other secondary dissociated from this final modal. One of the consequences of this generativist apprehension of the pitches is that it makes it possible to relativize their variations by introducing the notion of melodic allophonic variation, in other words, a limited variation of pitch which does not involve a change of musical phoneme, and that of melodic phonemic variation, that is to say a sufficient variation of pitch to induce a change of musical phoneme. This is accompanied with a categorization that concerns the modal scale as a whole. This is along with the distinction made between the several musical fundamental modes traditions of the Orient, in a limited number, on one hand, and, on the other hand, the multitude of modes derived from each of them. This derivation leads to a semiotic assimilation of derivatives with their foundations. Therefore, these considerations push the musical analyst to relativize the melodic phonological differences that exist between the modal scales. Thus, this research seeks to demonstrate the semiotic categorization of the phonological differences of the modals which are reflected in the cognitive perception of these Lebanese children aged 6 to 12 years. Validation of this hypothesis is based on an experimental statistical study of this age group of 154 Lebanese children in the public school sector.

La théorie sémiotique modale introduit dans l’appréhension analytique des monodies traditionnelles de l’Orient une catégorisation phonologique sous-jacente des hauteurs qui est fortement hiérarchisée qui permet de relativiser les variations de celles-ci en introduisant les notions de phonème (degré de l’échelle modale) et d’allophone (variante contextuelle d’un degré de l’échelle) modaux. Ceci est doublé d’une catégorisation qui intéresse l’échelle modale dans sa globalité. Il s’agit de la distinction qu’opèrent plusieurs traditions de l’Orient musical entre, d’une part, des modes fondamentaux, en nombre limité, et, d’autre part, la multitude des modes dérivés de chacun de ceux-ci, cette dérivation conduisant à une assimilation sémiotique des dérivés avec leurs fondements. Ces considérations amènent par conséquent l’analyste musical à relativiser les différences phonologiques mélodiques qui existent entre les échelles modales. Aussi cet article cherche-t-il à démontrer que la catégorisation sémiotique de ces différences phonologiques modales se reflète dans la perception cognitive que peuvent avoir de celles-ci des enfants libanais âgés de 6 à 12 ans. La validation de cette hypothèse s’appuie sur une étude expérimentale de terrain.
