The negation maašii in a Yaafi‘i dialect (Yemen)

Abstract : In the Arabic variety of the area of Yafi‘ in Yemen, the so-called nominal negative particle is also often used with verbs. It bears modal values linked to the speaker's subjectivity, among them a contrastive value, and also a polemic attitude of strong opposition, contradiction, denial or rejection of a previous utterance. The process is also known in other Arabic varieties, e.g. in Maltese and Moroccan Arabic, and it even became grammaticalized in the Anatolian varieties of Arabic.
